Jules Smith's Bio
Off-Grid Art - Inner Worlds
Jules Smith is a conceptual artist and eco-therapist living and working in a Devon woodland. Her creative practice has grown from detailed pen and ink drawing into expansive, intuitive explorations of inner life, nature, spirit and human impact.
For Jules, creativity is not separate from everyday living. Her art is part of a wider attempt to live lightly: building an off-grid home, making, foraging, recycling and shaping a life in which creativity, sustainability and personal freedom are closely connected. A central question runs through her work: how can she live with the lowest possible impact on the planet, both as a human being and as an artist?
Jules studied at Leicester Polytechnic before graduating from St Martin’s School of Art in London with a BA in Graphic Design. Her career has moved through illustration, design, portraiture, narrative painting, sculpture and craft. She has worked on commissions and exhibitions connected with organisations including WWF, the BBC, The Mall Gallery and The Royal Academy, and spent time in Milan as a cartoonist for The Walt Disney Corporation.
A permaculture course in 2002 became a turning point, deepening the environmental focus of her work. In 2008 she began building an off-grid lodge on 20 acres of semi-wild woodland, a decision shaped by both ecological concern and personal wellbeing. Later, through her degree in Integrative Counselling, she developed her interest in eco-therapy and the relationship between creativity, nature and mental freedom.
In exhibition, Jules’ work may include paintings, drawings and crafted pieces. Across this variety, her practice invites viewers into a thoughtful, low-impact and deeply personal creative world.
