Impressions of Dartmoor
During the last two years I’ve been working on a series of paintings based on personal memories. And in particular those that relate to my local environment, people and family.
As one gets older so does the desire to look back and recall poignant moments in one’s life. As a consequence, my artworks are painted for myself, and the act of creating them has become a therapy of sorts.
I moved to Devon – more precisely, the edge of Dartmoor, over 30 years ago. The moor became, and still is, a prime inspiration for my paintings. The only change in recent works is the style; it’s more impressionist. But although the scenes portrayed are real, a fair bit of artistic licence and adjustment has been employed (I trained as an illustrator and having to ‘unlearn’ being precise and orderly has been enlightening!). Prior to this much of my work was abstract, heavily influence by modernist art – in particular abstract expressionism. I paint mainly in oils or acrylic on canvas but the recent works are on cut-down wooden door panels – another poignant reminder that as one door closes, another door opens.
