Kate Anstead's Bio

Sculpture inspired by nature

I am a multidisciplinary artist whose practice is primarily in sculpture, extending across drawing, printmaking, and textiles.

After returning to my home county of Devon over twenty years ago to raise my family, I have recently reconnected with my independent artistic practice. Following the completion of my BA in Sculpture at Wimbledon School of Art in 1989, I chose to pursue a career in the conservation of architectural stonework. This work took me into cathedrals, churches, and historic properties throughout the South and West of England, where I spent many years repairing and conserving stone artefacts, structures, and architectural features.

In 2024, I completed a Master of Fine Arts at the Arts University Plymouth. Since then, I have fully re-engaged with my artistic journey, developing a practice that draws upon both my sculptural training and my extensive experience in conservation.

Working within these ecclesiastical and heritage environments had fostered a lasting interest in the relationship between objects and the spaces they inhabit. It also deepened my curiosity about the ways in which humans shape and manipulate their environments, and how we observe, interpret, and translate the natural world into material forms.

Using materials such as concrete, glass, stone, and wood, I create sculptural objects inspired by our relationship with the landscape. I am drawn to the textures, forms, and patterns found in nature, as well as the effects of weather, erosion, and human intervention. My work explores the balance between permanence and change, inviting viewers to reflect on their own connections with the natural world.
